Lupe Fiasco Announces Three-Disc "Final" Album

Lupe Fiasco has announced his third album, and true to form for the MC, the whole thing sounds unnecessarily complicated. [Via the LupE.N.D. Blog]

Here's how it breaks down. As Lupe told us in an interview interview last year, the follow-up to The Cool will be titled LupE.N.D., and it will be his last album. But at a show at Chicago's Congress Theatre on Halloween, Lupe offered some more information: The last three letters of the title stand for Everywhere, Nowhere, and Down Here, which are the individual names given to the three discs of LupE.N.D. That's right, Lupe is planning to "retire" (seeing is believing-- or rather, in this case, never seeing again is believing) with a triple-CD release.

As a point of reference, Wikipedia claims MF Grimm's 2006 record American Hunger was "the first three-disc album in hip-hop history." If you're asking yourself, "MF Who?," or "American What?" right now: Exactly.

Call me skeptical, but retiring after you release one decent-ish album, one incredibly abstract and convoluted concept album [Hey! I think both of those albums are pretty great!-- Ed.], and a sure-to-be-bloated triple-disc monstrosity is not the way to cement your place in rap history.

In addition to all this, the LupE.N.D. Blog also reports that Lupe recorded a live CD/DVD at that Halloween show. It doesn't seem to be attached to LupE.N.D., which means it had better come out before that, so as not to disturb the integrity of the MC's retirement.

Attempts to ask Lupe, "Why? Just...why?" in person can be made at any of his remaining tour dates.

Dizzee Rascal Obama Chat Sparks Debate Over Racism

Shortly after Barack Obama won the U.S. presidential election, Dizzee Rascal checked in via satellite for a chat with television presenter Jeremy Paxman on the BBC program "Newsnight". The topic, not so surprisingly, was race, one the BBC's U.S. press counterparts were addressing in earnest at the time as well, given the milestone nature of Obama's victory.

It could have been another enlightening conversation on a subject on the minds of many, but as noted in a recent report in The Guardian, plenty of folks are none too happy about the way the Paxman chat played out.

Paxman has drawn criticism for being "patronising," "crass," and, as a separate Guardian TV & Radio Blog post puts it, "condescending." In particular, his decision to ask Dizzee Rascal "Do you feel yourself to be British?" has raised eyebrows, as some feel the same question would never have been asked of a white musician. Further complicating that point is a statement in the Guardian story from a BBC spokesperson, which suggests Paxman's question followed a comment about "Britishness" from former House of Lords leader Baroness Amos, who was also part of the chat. That comment appears in the interview transcript The Guardian has published, but not in the video of the program that's making the rounds (see below).

Dizzee's seen his share of flak as well, from other rappers and citizens who feel he misrepresented black and/or hip-hop culture, and from some 50 viewers who, The Guardian notes, wrote in to the BBC to question the rapper's "suitability as a guest on [a] special...watched by 1.4 million people." Judge for yourself in the video below, but frankly I find it hard to slight Dizzee for basically being himself, even if he was sometimes tangled up by the semantics and some of Paxman's dodgier questions (How exactly is one meant to respond to "Do you believe in political parties in Britain?" anyway?). Dizzee's UK label XL has no comment on the matter, and notes that Dizzee himself is not available for comment. He may well be off gearing up for a short UK jaunt that kicks off this weekend, or prepping for the arena-sized audiences he'll face when he opens for the Prodigy in April of next year.

We told you about the songs that came out supporting President-elect Barack Obama and, to an admittedly lesser extent, Sen. John McCain in the months before last Tuesday's election (man, was that really only a week ago?). In the days immediately ahead of the vote, other musicians continued to send in their ballots, including Usher, who put out a pro-Obama video just a couple of days before the polls closed. While I hope people can focus on Obama potentially becoming "the first recent successful president"-- as left-leaning media critic Bob Somerby recently put it-- rather than making him bear the weight of his racial identity in a way white presidents don't, I have to say my favorite musical tribute so far has come in the form of 14 versions of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" posted by WFMU.

Since Obama's Nov. 4 victory, plenty of musicians have celebrated the win their own way. Here are some of the more noteworthy tracks, good and bad, red-eyed and blue:

Brother Ali: "Mr. President, You're the Man"
After the closely contested elections of the past decade, surprise was bound to be among the complicated mix of emotions reigning Tuesday night, poll numbers be damned. "He won, man," Brother Ali begins on Marvin Gaye-sampling celebratory song "Mr. President, You're the Man". Handclaps, funky guitars, and Gaye's soulful falsetto counter Ali's giddily forceful delivery: "I got to pinch myself/ I can't believe it." (via 2dopeboyz)

Common: "Changes"
Chicago's own Common was one of the first rappers to mention Obama, on Finding Forever's "The People". A laid-back bass groove and light, Sunday-afternoon horns back wide-eyed rhymes on Common's Obama tribute, "Changes". Slinky keyboards and some vaguely trippy breakdowns make it easy on the ears, even if you never needed to hear Common whistle. Before an excerpt from one of Obama's most famous speeches comes the voice of a child: "Change is inevitable... Change was Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, Shakespeare, Assata Shakur, Barack Obama-- and you can't forget Common."

Dead Milkmen: "Bitchin' Camaro (Obama Intro)" part 2)
Much-loved banana peel smokers Dead Milkmen seized Obama's victory not as something to stop and memorialize but as an inspirational call to action going forward. Over the punkish 1985 original's familiar walking bass line, singer and guitarist Joe Genaro exhorts: "If the black guy with the Arab name can become president, there's nothing you motherfuckers can't do." Then they tear through a mosh-worthy version of the song at Austin's Fun Fun Fun Fest. (via BrooklynVegan)

Jay-Z [ft. Tony Williams]: "We Made History"
Self-referentially lighter-ready stadium anthem that again makes me think of Chicago. This time not so much the city as the Peter Cetera power ballads. Jay-Z manages to support the bombast with some fairly strong verses that bring the political down to a personal level. Kanye West produced and you can find it at his blog.

Nas: "Election Night"
"What's a black president thinking on Election Night?" asked Nas on "Black President", from his most recent, untitled album. He and DJ Green Lantern revisit that question on an Election Night track entitled, ahem, "Election Night". The lyrics are strikingly up-to-date, like in that latest "South Park" episode, even mentioning Obama's late grandmother. The military-style drums and zipping electronics make for a decent backdrop, too, but as both such a campaign-specific song and something of a sequel, it's unlikely this one's going to have much shelf value.

Punchline: "What a Wonderful World" (Louis Armstrong cover)
Pittsburgh band Punchline's Obama-inspired punk-pop cover of "What a Wonderful World" is every bit as heinous as that description might imply (in other words, they're not that Hawaiian dude). And what's with the psychedelic spoken-word section? I guess it's the thought that counts, though, and it's a good time to remember that songwriters Bob Thiele and George David Weiss wrote the original for Louis Armstrong with an eye toward transcending racial and political division. Q-Tip: "Shaka"
Q-Tip's impressive return album, The Renaissance, came out on Election Day, and its song "Shaka" featured an unusual guest star (at least for an officially sanctioned release): Obama himself. Q-Tip's slippery flow darts amid the jazzy, discordant guitars, sounding a serious note of his own. Also check out DJ Scratch's recent remix of The Renaissance's "Gettin' Up", featuring previous Q-Tip collaborator Busta Rhymes.

Thom Yorke: "Tchk Harrowdown Jump Rmx"
This one really doesn't have anything to do with Obama's victory, except Yorke dedicated its Nov. 5 release, in part, to "the dawn of a new era in politics in the USA."

Will.i.am: "It's a New Day"
Will.i.am, the Black-Eyed Pea member behind the much-viewed "Yes I Can" video, stays heavy-handed on the optimistic, rock-based "It's a New Day". "Gotta manifest that dream," he says, in front of video footage from Obama's victory, shots of Will.i.am driving, and plenty of images of people celebrating. (via XXL)

Ya Boy: "I've Got the Power"
Aside from an Obama speech snippet at the beginning and a somewhat-stale "I'm the rap Obama" line in the chorus, San Francisco rapper Ya Boy's organ-surging "I've Got the Power" is relatively perfunctory I'm rich/great/etc. boasting, without the necessary wit. Mostly posting this for the vintage Snap! sample. You know what I'm talking about. (via Nah Right)

Young Jeezy [ft. Nas]: "My President" (Live on "Last Call With Carson Daly")
Looks like those e-mails to Jesus paid off for Young Jeezy. He and Nas appeared on Carson Daly's show the night before the election, but their performance hit the blogs big-time on Nov. 5. Those celebratory synths and Jeezy's largely apolitical non sequiturs sound just about right in this new political climate (this whole Depression thing makes a blue Lambo sound even better, too, particularly now that the city has towed my wife's decades-old Civic). Plus, Nas's verse is far more aware of its flashy surroundings than I gave him credit for in our previous campaign songs feature: "She ain't a politician/ Honey's a pole-itician." Heheh, Beavis. Of all the Kanye leaks this is still my favorite. The autotune actually sounds like it belongs on this song. Here is the animated video for Kanye's "Heartless" off 808s and Heartbreak, in stores 11/25.

Video: Gnarls Barkley "Mystery Man"

Trip out to this Walter Robot directed video for the unreleased Gnarls joint "Mystery Man." The song appears on the Who's Gonna Save My Soul EP (11/11 via Atlantic) which also includes four versions of the title track, and a live recording of "Neighbors." Up until the release date you can head to gnarlsbarkley.com and download MP3s of those versions of the title track (as well as the video). After 11/11, no dice.

Seth MacFarlane is 1 wealthy 'Family' guy

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Talk about inflation. Seth MacFarlane is Hollywood's hundred-million dollar man — and he's not even bionic.

MacFarlane, 35, is creator and executive producer of "Family Guy," Fox's top-rated prime-time 'toon (yes, even more popular than "The Simpsons"), one of the all-time best-selling TV-on-DVD titles, and a show that spearheaded the digital-download video phenomenon.

So it's no wonder the studio recently served up a $100 million production deal to keep their "Family" man happy. MacFarlane also is at the helm of the Fox 'toon "American Dad!" and is working on a "Family Guy" spin-off series, "Cleveland."

"In all honesty, my representative said I could get that much money and I didn't stop him," MacFarlane said. "Can I spend a hundred-million dollars? No. I'll spread it around a much as I can."

Spreading the wealth? Clearly, MacFarlane is an Obama man. He did some campaigning for the Democratic presidential candidate, and even took a shot at the Republican competition on "Family Guy."

In a recent episode, baby Stewie is transported to World War II Germany, clunks a Nazi on the head, steals his uniform, and puts it on. "Hey, there's something on here," Stewie says, feeling something on the jacket's lapel.

Cut to a close-up of a "McCain-Palin" button.

The gag got huge laughs at a rare public prescreening of the episode for a sold-out crowd at The Paley Center for Media. MacFarlane then sat down with The Associated Press to talk about money, politics and the future of "Family Guy."

AP: So, how does $100 million change your life?
MacFarlane: Nothing I can do can really live up to that amount of money on a daily basis, so my view of it ... (is that) I gave them all of my 20s, which are irretrievable. (I put my) heart and soul into that show, and, in turn, they give me $100 million. I think that's fair. One of those is replaceable, the other isn't.

AP: Word is the first thing you bought was a house.
MacFarlane: It's airy, open. It's not huge, not palatial. As a graduate of art school, I'm very conscious of the use of space, more than anything else.

AP: Given how much you work, does it really matter where you live?
MacFarlane: Yeah, I guess that's true. It really doesn't matter where you live because I'm never there. When I am there, I want it to have the environment of a retreat.

AP: Let's talk about what pays the mortgage: "Family Guy." What's new for the seventh season?
MacFarlane: In one episode, Stewie kidnaps the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." They (the original cast members) all came back, reunited to do their voices for us. Brian tries to legalize pot in Quahog (Rhode Island, where the show is set). Peter tells the story of his ancestry. Down the line, we have our "Family Guy" abortion episode, believe it or not. Hats off to Fox for letting us take some risks, as always. There can be a lot of trouble, but at the end of the day, they do generally step up for risky, sensitive, topical stuff.

AP: More than one of your writers has said that seven seasons in, you're running out of pop-culture things to reference.
MacFarlane: At this point, we hope the characters have gotten to the point that we don't have to lean on that quite as much. There's always new media and new pieces of pop culture emerging that you can make fun of, and so we'll continue to draw from that. But I don't think it's as much of a crutch as it was 10 years ago.

AP: But after the success of "Blue Harvest" (the show's "Star Wars" spoof), you're going back to the "Star Wars" well.
MacFarlane: It was so popular that we thought it might be fun to write the "Empire (Strikes Back)" episode; it would be fun to do. As we got into the "Empire" episode, we found that it's almost twice as much work, but we'll get through it, somehow, and it'll be great. It's like redoing the movie.

AP: Cleveland (a "Family Guy" neighbor) is getting his own series. What does it say about the state of television that Entertainment Weekly picks him — an animated character — as the cover boy for a story on African-American characters in prime-time?
MacFarlane: This is a guy who's played like a real three-dimensional guy — not just as a cardboard, stereotyped black guy. I actually would stack that show up against other shows about black characters in recent years because I think a lot of them are — they dumb them down for some reason. They talk down to their audience. We're just treating this like "Family Guy," like any other show.

AP: "American Dad!" has always been the stepchild of "Family Guy" in terms of viewers and critics.
MacFarlane: It's had a struggle. "American Dad!" has had a struggle. But now it's regularly beating "The Simpsons."

AP: Say, 20 years from now, what are you hoping people will think about Seth MacFarlane and "Family Guy"?
MacFarlane: I don't know. It also depends on what way television standards go. If the FCC continues to put the crunch on everything and things become more conservative, "Family Guy" may be viewed like "All in the Family," which would be like the greatest thing in the world for me. It's just about the greatest show there was. ... Twenty years from now, if they say the show is still funny, that's enough for me."

DRS Recordings (aka DeathRayScientific)

DRS Recordings (aka DeathRayScientific) was originally based in Texas and transplanted over to Minnesota, where they have been hosting various shows at the Dinkytowner called Switch, dedicated to MC Battling, as well as being a showcase for the local scene acts of today within Minneapolis/St. Paul. DRS consists of the following members: Esbe, djo, Savage Henry, Leonard Rhombus, geofferywatsonMC, DisputeOne, Spy, Shelltoe (who served as a regional Scribble Jam winner), A.Po, and Wide Eyes, among several others. They recently just held a Halloween Release Party at the Dinkytowner this past friday for their first effort as a crew. And needless to say, it really holds up.

I was amazingly surprised at each of the efforts on this rathter sprawled out 18+ track disc, but it was engineered awesomely and very well presented from the artwork to the music in it. It's abstract, but not as abstract as Anticon, at the same time it provides a very nice feel and rich tapestry across each track, and this is because of each individual act present on this disc and how differently they ride production from Esbe, Enlightened Minds, Sean Anonymous, Filthy McNasty and various others.

If you have a chance, you can visit their website or their myspace to check out the tunes as well as each of the individual artists. Supposedly the whole release party was taped, and I did a rendition of ODB's "Shimmy Shimmy Ya." Will it end up in there? We'll see....

Flying Lotus Announces Remix EP, Tour, DJ-Kicks

SoCal beatmaker Flying Lotus will continue his love affair with Los Angeles on the second EP in his L.A. trilogy. L.A. EP 2 X 3 consists of other folks' remixes of tracks from Flying Lotus' 2008 full-length Los Angeles, and Warp will release the disc on December 9. You can check out Nosaj Thing's remix of "Camel" by downloading the free mp3 below.

Mr. Lotus also has some European dates scheduled for November, but before those begin, he has two installments of his "Brainfeeder" party taking place in San Francisco and, you guessed it, Los Angeles. In addition to Flying Lotus, these events will feature appearances by Daedelus, Switch, Kode 9, Martyn, Samiyam, Ras G, Hudson Mohawke, Kutmah, and the Gaslamp Killer.

Finally, Flying Lotus is on deck to craft an upcoming installment of !K7's DJ-Kicks series for release next year. He has also created a track, tentatively titled "Buried", for inclusion on Burial's forthcoming DJ Kicks mix.

Q-Tip, the Cool Kids Lead NBA 2K9 Tour

Screw the Madden franchise and every baseball video game in existence except for EA's MVP Baseball 2005 (Kaz Ishii = dirty). In my incredibly unqualified opinion, 2K Sports' NBA 2K8 was the best sports-related video game to come around in a while.

And hey, what do you know, NBA 2K9 is in stores now, and the folks at 2K have assembled a bunch of rappers to go on the "2K Sports Bounce Tour" in support of the new game. Man, the only other things I need are weed and a couple trips to McDonald's, and I could hibernate for the winter.

Q-Tip, the Cool Kids, DJ Scratch (EPMD), and the Knux will appear on all dates of the tour, with Pacific Divison and Janelle Monáe showing up at just a few.

The tour begins November 5 in Chicago.

R.I.P. Levi Stubbs, Four Tops Vocalist

Motown legend and Four Tops lead singer Levi Stubbs passed away in his home today (October 17) following a series of illnesses, according to Billboard.com. He was 72.

Stubbs and the Four Tops were responsible for some of the most enduring songs in pop and R&B history, from "Baby I Need Your Loving" to "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" to "Reach Out I'll Be There". Over their storied career, the Tops sold more than 50 million records and scored 45 chart hits, maintaining their original lineup of Stubbs, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Renaldo "Obie" Benson, and Lawrence Payton for more than 40 years.

Stubbs continued regularly performing with the group until 2000, when illness forced him off the road. He appeared with the Tops for the last time at a 50th anniversary show in 2004. In addition to his singing work, Stubbs lent his voice to Audrey II, the foul-mouthed man-eating plant in 1986's Little Shop of Horrors.

Stubbs is survived by his wife of 48 years and five children.

Radiohead's In Rainbows Successes Revealed

Over the next couple days in Reykjavik, Iceland, music industry sorts will gather for You Are in Control, an international conference dealing with issues in music and media. One such presenter is Jane Dyball, head of business affairs for Warner/Chappell, the publishing company responsible for the work of that Radiohead band. Dyball's presentation concerns all kinds of data surrounding last October's release of In Rainbows, which, as you may have heard, completely changed the music business forever and stuff.

Well, not really; but according to a report on Dyball's figures from "digital music business information and strategy company" Music Ally-- which has been confirmed by Radiohead's publicist-- In Rainbows certainly worked out well for the band.

The writeup suggests that there have been three million purchases of In Rainbows thus far, from digital sales through the band's webstore in the run up to the album's release, the discboxes, the eventual physical release of the album on CD, and through other digital outlets. More specifically, the band moved around 100,000 of those (very nice!) discboxes, and the physical CD has sold 1.75 million units to date worldwide. Not bad for a thing you could get for free.

The report characterizes the In Rainbows experiment as a success, noting "for Warner it served to prove a point that by licensing directly (i.e. outside the collecting society network) and by offering a genuine one stop shop for licensing (i.e. combining all the digital rights into one offer from a single entity) the publisher was able to generate far more money for both themselves and the band than would have been possible under the traditional system."

Music Ally also notes that the last several Radiohead releases sold in the hundreds of thousands, not millions, so the buzz-building nature of the band's release plan certainly lit a fire under consumers. To that end, the report offers that "the fact that Radiohead had made more money before In Rainbows was physically released than they made in total on Hail to the Thief is surely evidence enough that the initiative was a tremendous success." Better album, too.

There were, of course, some hang-ups; the thing hit BitTorrent almost immediately after its release, and it's "clear that the BitTorrent downloads did indeed greatly outnumber those from Radiohead's official site." In fact, the band and their management kept a pretty keen eye on the digital sales of the disc through their website, "and were watching the average price daily with a view to potentially withdrawing it any moment should it drop too low."

They did, eventually, pull the free download option off the site, but the point seems to be this: what they did worked awfully damn well-- for Radiohead, for this particular album, at this particular moment. The article notes this as well: "In fact, if anything, the only trouble with the whole thing was that it was just arguably too successful. The whole 'pay what you like' experiment became the story rather than the music itself. And that's not so Radiohead. The band and Thom Yorke initially found themselves answering questions about why they chose to do what they did rather than being asked about the music itself."

So, back to the music, then. Thom's on that new Björk single, and the band recently joined the artist advocacy group Featured Artists Coalition. Having finally wrapped that Japanese tour, they've got no live dates on the way at the moment, opting instead to work up the successor to In Rainbows. New Radiohead album? AAAAAAAHHH!!!

Kanye Premieres 808s & Heartbreak at Weird L.A. Party

Someone from The FADER made their way to a listening party for Kanye West's forthcoming 808s and Heartbreak at Los Angeles' Ace Gallery last night. To the surprise of no one, the whole affair was very lavish, and totally weird. Things went down in a stark room packed with 40 naked ladies-- wearing masks ostensibly made of fake lamb's wool, obviously-- who were backlit by glowing lights as the music went on. The evening's visual portion was designed by Italian artist of note Vanessa Beecroft, and Mos Def, will.i.am, and Rick Ross were all reportedly in attendance [via Idolator].

As for the album, 808s and Heartbreak apparently has Mr. West singing in his beloved Auto-Tune on virtually every track, and features a relatively pared-down selection of guests, with cameos from Young Jeezy (not singing, we imagine) and Lil Wayne (who knows anymore). As the title might suggest, it's a breakup album, with the exception of closer "Coldest Winter", which is about Kanye's late mother Donda West. The Fader report likens the sound of the disc to that of "ADULT. or Thom Yorke solo, with the dispassionate electro beats playing against the plainspoken ache of the vocals." Well all right then.

West then showed up as things were winding down to note that 808s and Heartbreak concerns "emotional nakedness," that the album is "about the freedom to do what you want to do," that Auto-Tune is "the most fun thing ever," and that he'll be issuing another new LP in June. Perhaps he will rap on that one.

808s and Heartbreak, whether you're ready or not, hits stores November 25 from Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam. Kanye, meanwhile, hits the road on Friday for the first of many fall tour stops.

And finally, one more intriguing Kanye tidbit: Lykke Li is set to join Kanye on his contribution to N.A.S.A.'s batshit forthcoming LP, according to a report on Swedish blog PSL confirmed by N.A.S.A.'s publicist. The track is reportedly still in the works.

Beastie Boys Add Swing State Shows

Beastie Boys have expanded their previously reported "Get Out and Vote '08" tour by a factor of two. The number of shows in swing states is at six now, thanks to the addition of dates in Charlotte, Dayton, and Youngstown (Ohio). The new shows will also feature sets from Sheryl Crow, Santogold, Norah Jones, and Ben Harper.

Beastie Boys' political fascinations don't end with this tour. Today (October 15), Beastie Adam Yauch's film distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories released Frontrunners, a documentary film about the student council presidential campaign at NYC's Stuyvesant High School, to theaters. The film's soundtrack includes selections from various Elephant 6 bands and the Album Leaf.

Frontrunners is just one of many movies Oscilloscope is releasing this fall, both to theaters and on DVD. On October 21, Yauch's basketball documentary, Gunnin' for That #1 Spot, comes to DVD. On Halloween, the company will release a true crime documentary called Dear Zachary to theaters. Finally, on December 10 comes Wendy and Lucy, a new movie from Old Joy director Kelly Reichardt starring Michelle Williams and featuring songwriter/Old Joy actor Will Oldham "as a face-tattooed gutter punk," according to a press release.

Yauch will appear at the Virgin Megastore in NYC's Union Square on October 21 to promote the release of the Gunnin' for That #1 Spot DVD.

Rocksteady Legend Alton Ellis R.I.P.

Alton Ellis, the Jamaican singer known as "The Godfather of Rocksteady", passed away Friday, October 10 at Hammersmith Hospital in London. He was 70 years old.

According to an AP report citing hospital officials, "Ellis died peacefully," and "his family did not wish to release details." However, an obituary on the Trojan Records site points to a longstanding battle with cancer of the lymph glands as the cause of Ellis' death.

Ellis rose to prominence in Jamaica as a ska singer for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's Studio One label in the early 60s, but his most influential contributions to Jamaican music came with his jump to Arthur "Duke" Reid's Treasure Isle in the mid-60s. It was there that Ellis pioneered rocksteady, which preceded reggae by slowing down the tempo of ska, putting more direct focus on the bass, and aping the sweeter, lighter singing style of American R&B stars.

Both solo and with his vocal group the Flames, Ellis' hits for included "I'm Still in Love With You", "Get Ready - Rock Steady", "Cry Tough", "Girl I've Got a Date", "My Willow Tree", and "Dance Crasher".

In the 70s, Ellis moved to England, where he started his own Alltone label and record store. In 2006, he was inducted in the International Reggae and World Music Awards Hall of Fame.

Maxwell Unveils New Songs At Radio City

Maxwell introduced several new songs last night (Oct. 9) during a hometown show at New York's Radio City Music Hall, part of his first tour in six years. "Pretty Wings," "Bad Habits" and "Comb" will be included on the forthcoming Columbia album "Black Summers' Night." No release date has been announced.

"This song, it's about wanting to be with somebody but meeting them too early," Maxwell told the audience of "Pretty Wings." The moderately paced "Bad Habits" found Maxwell asking in the chorus, "Will you forgive me?," while "Comb" showcased a two-step drum pattern with a strong horn section and a smooth guitar roll.

Flanked by a nine-piece band in black and white suits, Maxwell began the show with "Get To Know Ya" from his third and last album, 2001's "Now." The crowd, made of mostly couples and single ladies, sang along to each word as he ran through his most popular singles "No One," "Lifetime" and "This Woman's Work."

By the time he reached "Everwanting: To Want You To Want," he'd also reached the floor -- to hump his microphone stand. The band improvised "Sumthin Sumthin," adding the beat from Jay-Z's "Can't Knock the Hustle," before the crooner introduced "Pretty Wings."

Just as he was about to launch into "Til The Cops Come Knockin'," Maxwell stopped the music and said, "There are not enough panties on my stage right now!" One woman promptly threw a blue rose on stage and another threw a rather large pair of white panties, which Maxwell tossed over his shoulder as he finished the song. "Go get drunk, go have sex, we love ya!" he said to close the evening.

Maxwell's tour will return to New York for a Nov. 23 finale at United Palace Theater.

Beastie Boys Plot Star-Studded Vote Shows

The Beastie Boys have drafted Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Jack Johnson and Ben Harper to join them on the Get Out and Vote tour, which will begin Oct. 28 in Richmond, Va. Shows are also set for Nov. 1 in St. Paul, Minn., and Nov. 2 in Milwaukee.

"This election is too important to stay at home," the rap trio said this morning (Oct. 10), adding that it is endorsing Barack Obama for president. "We hope that you can come out, have a nice night, dance, sing, get your freak on, and then wake up the next morning and get everyone that you possibly can to get out and vote."

Crow, Jones, Johnson and Santogold are on the bill for the Richmond show, while Harper and Tenacious D will support in St. Paul. Harper, Tenacious D and David Crosby and Graham Nash will join the Beasties in Milwaukee.

McCain: Out Of Touch?

According to Reuters:

"Stocks plummeted for a seventh straight session on Thursday as investors bet recent moves by authorities worldwide to thaw frozen credit markets would not be enough to avert a global recession.

An avalanche of selling at the close left the Dow below 8,600 for the first time since May 2003. The Nasdaq and the S&P 500 each also fell to levels not seen in more than five years."

And What's McCain talking about?

Republican presidential nominee John McCain questioned whether Democrat Barack Obama is "telling the truth" about his ties to a former left-wing radical on Thursday as he tried to raise doubts about Obama's character.

His goal was to tie Obama to William Ayers, a founding member of the Weather Underground, a radical left anti-Vietnam War group that bombed the U.S. Capitol in 1971 and the Pentagon in 1972. He spent 10 years as a fugitive and his ex-radical wife Bernardine Dohrn, spent time on the FBI's Most Wanted list.

"We don't care about an old washed-up terrorist and his wife," McCain said. "That's not the point here. The point is Sen. Obama said he was just a guy in the neighborhood. We know that's not true. We need to know the full extent of the relationship because of whether Sen. Obama is telling the truth to the American people or not."

"The issue is Barack Obama's judgment and candor," the announcer in the ad says. "When Obama just says, 'This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood,' Americans say, 'Where's the truth, Barack?' Barack Obama. Too risky for America."

Kanye, Ghostface, Chuck D Join Insane N.A.S.A. LP

It's been over a year since we first reported that David Byrne, Tom Waits, M.I.A., and members of the Wu-Tang Clan and Yeah Yeah Yeahs would appear on the debut album from N.A.S.A. (North America/South America), along with a heap of other notable guests. Corralling all those folks onto one record was no easy task, but the duo is finally ready to reveal the album's title, official tracklist, label, and release date. It's a bonanza of album details!

The album is called The Spirit of Apollo, and it's due to hit shelves via Anti- on February 17.

As previously reported, The Spirit of Apollo features beats crafted by the duo of Squeak E. Clean (aka DJ/producer/composer Sam Spiegel, brother of director Spike Jonze) and DJ Zegon (aka DJ/producer/professional skateboarder Ze Gonzales), plus contributions from the aforementioned artists as well as Kool Keith, CSS' Lovefoxxx, Spank Rock, John Frusciante, Fatlip and Slim Kid Tre from the Pharcyde, E-40, Gift of Gab, Chali 2na, KRS-One, George Clinton, Seu Jorge, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Amanda Blank, Z-Trip, and DJ Qbert.

But wait, there's more. Since our original report, there have been plenty of big-name additions to the guest list, including Kanye West, Chuck D, Ghostface Killah (a previously unreported Wu member), the Cool Kids, Scarface, and Santogold.

N.A.S.A. have a single show scheduled for Halloween in Los Angeles. Zegon, however, has plenty of DJ dates for himself.
